Re: I could not have said it better
"Death in the Long Grass" author, Peter Hathaway Capstick, related a story where two brothers once killed an elephant with a .22 LR. Peter was working at the time as a Kenyan goverment hunter culling herds that were over-grazing and rampaging through villages. He did not recommend the practice but he knew a particular spot where an artery ran just below the hide.
There are two confirmed cases in the colonial era in British East Africa. Capstick refers to both in one of his books, and John Taylor also confirmed it. In both cases, the bullet hit behind the foreleg, where the tough hide is rubbed thin by friction between leg and body, and penetrated a major artery, so that the elephant bled to death internally. The first case was accidental, and the hunter reported it to a control officer, who couldn't believe it - so the two of them set out to repeat the exploit, and did so, to the demise of a second elephant. The first incident was an effort to spook the elephant into moving where someone else could get a better shot, and the second was to prove the first one happened. I believe the story was told in Peter's book, "Safari: The Last Adventure". |

Pistols are for fighting your way to a rifle and a hi-cap pistol lets you be anoying much longer than a 7 shooter. If I wanted a low cap I would have a 357 revolver. Thats my $.02 on the subject anyway.

Re: I could not have said it better
Not. An awesome man would expect to hit with each bullet. With the exception of a war zone, you don't carry 20 times the number of bullets you plan to expend. He obviously expects to miss a whole lot.

Re: I could not have said it better
Actually, the Russian anti-tank dog story is quite a sad one. The Russians trained the doggies to climb under tanks left and right, but the training was all for naught when the Germans drove up with their gasoline burning rigs. You see the Russian dogs trained under Diesel tanks all the time, so when the Russians let the doggie tank busters loose, they ran under all the Russian tanks instinctively blowing up only Russian tanks. The doggies homed in on the familiar Diesel the T-34s and BT-7s and the like. A total disaster. Nary a Maybach gasoline burning engine was exploded. Quite sad.

Re: I could not have said it better
Well, now that loaded 45 pistol with 8 rounds will weight about 40 ounces or a bit more, if it ain't plastic. My old all steel H&R 22 revolver, 109 rounds of LR ammo, a backup folding knife, and my nylon "camera shoulder bag" nylon holster weighs 46 ounces. Which would I rather have? In anything other than a domestic close quarters "one on one" situation the 22, besides even there if I dumped all my 9 rounds into the perp "the law" might give me a pass while if you shot the guy more than twice with the 45 you might become a "bad guy" in their eyes.
